Contour Roofing Explode at the SPRA Awards 2021

SPRA ContractorFireworks went off at the SPRA awards 2021 when Contour Roofing were “Highly commended” for the outstanding workmanship for the roofing works completed at the Royal Gunpowder Mills heritage site in Waltham Abbey, Essex.

A complex project due to its historical importance and public use, the Royal Gunpowder Mills heritage site in Waltham Abbey, Essex, was a multifaceted and challenging refurbishment.

Consisting of listed buildings, ancient monuments and natural aspect features, the site needed new roofing systems across its multiple buildings. Covering an area of 1200m2, the refurbishment had to be durable, sympathetic and uphold the heritage charity’s mission to preserve and conserve the site for the benefit of the general public. The Royal Gunpowder Mills is designated a Scheduled Monument, the highest protection that can be given to a historic site. Its landscape is shaped by 300 years of making explosives and propellants, sealed off from the outside world and featuring a large number of listed buildings, waterways, dry canals and an alder tree plantation which supplied the wood to make the charcoal, one of the three ingredients of gunpowder. The alder plantation is now part of a nature reserve, which is a site of special scientific interest and attracts a diverse range of animals and plants.

Its architecture is unique and great care was taken in the design of its buildings showing pride in its importance as a world leader in innovation and quality.  It is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

As part of an £100,000 figure project, 2019 saw us install a new roofing system on multiple buildings on the site.

Although there is no evidence that Guy Fawkes sourced the black powder from Waltham Abbey gunpowder mill, we at Contour believe strongly that this was the case.

This was a really testing but exciting scheme to be involved in and we are extremely proud of all the team that worked tirelessly on this project.
