From Design Challenges to Award-Winning Sustainable Roofing

This 1,407m² project presented a significant challenge due to the lack of detailed drawings and specifications. As a result, it became more of a build and design process rather than the traditional design and build model.
The Contour Estimating Team carried out multiple site visits with Bauder and Paul Simon to collaboratively develop appropriate details and finishes that met all necessary regulations. On-site mockups were produced for client review and approval prior to installation, and all agreed details were clearly communicated to the Contracts Team to ensure a seamless handover.
The project was our first experience using Bauder products, which introduced a steep learning curve. However, with strong support from Helena Tayt and the wider Bauder team—and the commitment and adaptability of our own staff—we successfully navigated this challenge and delivered a high-quality result.
Careful materials management was crucial, particularly as insulation was shipped directly from Germany. Our Flat Roofing Team implemented meticulous planning and ordering procedures to avoid delays and maintain progress on site.
Contracts Manager Dale Carter was instrumental in bringing the project to completion. One of the major hurdles he faced was the dependency on other trades to complete their work before roofing could be finalised. Dale coordinated this efficiently, ensuring temporary waterproofing and appropriate lapping were in place until permanent systems could be installed.
To meet the sustainability targets of the development, we worked with PV Plus for the installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels and Bridgeman and Bridgeman for the Green Roof systems. Both contractors were recommended by Bauder and are approved to install the Bio-Solar system used on this site. This integrated solution supports the creation of vibrant new ecosystems, restoration of lost habitats, and protection of priority species identified under the UK’s Biodiversity Action Plans. In addition, the system helps combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and conserving natural resources.
